Case history: HSBC

Brief After a morning of presentations, 200 delegates (in groups of about 40) were to spend the afternoon on an event circuit to learn about different aspects of the business, spending 25 minutes on 5 different activities. HSBC wanted one of the activities to be a fun, bonding and uniting energiser that could tie in with Adrian Webster's motivational speech in the morning…

Venue: Crewe Hall, Cheshire

Performance: After a quick introduction in which Mark Walker picked up on Adrian Webster's motivational speech, drums were handed out and a solid tribal rhythm was quickly established. Once some call and response was added the delegates were enthused by the incredibly musical rhythm they were creating, and any cynicism about the activity that some had (there were a few audible groans as people entered the room) was quickly dissipated. After 15 minutes hands and arms were tired, so a host of exotic musical instruments was produced, with didgeridoos, washboards, horns, whistles, tambourines, fruit shakers etc. being used by the delegates to create an unusual but strangely moving (!) piece of music. For a quick finale it was back to the drums with a bit of African singing thrown in for good measure…
